Radiator Controls

Smart radiator cover using sensors and software to provide apartment level heating controls and energy optimization for steam heated buildings

Radiator Controls

Description

Kelvin's Cozy radiator cover and control system uses wireless sensors and software to manage heating at the room level in centrally heated buildings. It regulates indoor temperature more precisely, improves comfort, and optimizes the use of existing heating equipment by adjusting heat delivery based on real-time conditions and individual apartment settings.

Key Differentiators

  • Greater control – Cozy provides room-level temperature control in centrally heated buildings, using wireless sensors for enhanced monitoring and control

  • Ease of integration – The solution integrates with existing heating systems without requiring full replacement

  • Improved tenant experience – The solution improves comfort while reducing overheating

Use Cases

  • Reduce building energy/utility costs

  • Optimize the usage of your HVAC equipment

  • Better visibility into real-time electricity use

  • Better visibility into real-time gas use

  • Regulate indoor temperature

  • Improve control over a unitized HVAC system

  • Use your existing HVAC equipment more efficiently

Cost Savings

25.5% NYSERDA validated average savings on heating costs

Decarbonization Impacts

Operational Emissions

As heating accounts for over 50% of energy use in NYC buildings, Kelvin's Cozy dramatically reduces emissions by lowering heating energy usage.

Project + Building Compatibility

Project Type

Existing building retrofit

Essential Building Characteristics

All radiator-heated buildings that utilize window or through-wall air conditioners.

Ideal Building Characteristics

Centrally heated buildings where temperature imbalance and overheating are present

Minimum Project Size

25,000 SF

Ideal Project Size

200,000+ SF

Additional Considerations

Complementary to Smart Boiler Controls, i.e. Runwise, Entech, and Heat-Timer

NY Contractor Availability

Installation contractor are available in NY

Other Screening Criteria

Natural Gas for heating enables rebates

Example Installations

Installed By

L+M, Fairstead, Rudin, LeFrak, First Service Residential, AvalonBay, NYCHA

Case Studies

Resident Experience

During Installation

Resident impact during installation is minimal. Installation takes ~1 hour per apartment.

Post Installation

Post-installaion, residents have great heating control and comfort, as well as lower onsite emissions.

Financing

NY Incentives/Financing Resources

Eligible incentives and financing resources are available, including a zero-cost upfront financing option. The zero-upfront cost option is a subscription-based model that includes installation. It is an alternative to their direct capital purchase. Utility incentives and federal tax credits are factored into the project that also offsets the overall cost. Subscription price is $10-$20 per apartment per month. All energy savings (net subscription fee) goes to the customer.

Upfront Costs

$350-$750 per Cozy before rebates and tax credits. After incentives, the cost is $0 - $300 per Cozy.

Ongoing Costs

$25/apt/year

Payback Period

1-4 years

Operations, Management, and Maintenance

Operations and Maintenance Requirements

Operations and maintenance requirements are minimal. Faulty fans can be swapped in ~2 minutes.

Ease of Operations

User Learning Curve: Residents have direct control over room temperature through the Cozy. Minimial user interaction beyond the preference of setting temperature

Operational Efficiency:
The Cozy system provides real-time monitoring, anlalytics, and reporting which reduces the operational burden

Service Support

Service or maintenance contractor are available.

Data + Performance

Through the platform, users gain visibility into room, radiator, and steam trap temperatures, as well as a full-building model that analyzes thermodynamic performance and identifies faulty steam risers.

Future Proofing

The Cozy product is durable and will last as long as the radiators do.
